Solidarity and Community: A Day in Willoq Patacancha

A joyful group of children after a hot chocolate gathering by Kenko Adventures, proudly wearing jackets they received, with the Kenko Adventures banner visible, embodying solidarity and festive cheer.

Hidden in the heart of the Sacred Valley, the small village of  Willoq Patacancha imposes itself in the face of modernity as a living testimony of its ancestors and Andean traditions, preserving its customs, clothing and native language, Quechua.

Located at an altitude of 13123.36 ft, in the town of Ollantaytambo in Cusco, the beauty of this place contrasts with the challenges faced by its inhabitants, especially the younger ones, who often deal with the inclemency of the cold climate of the highlands.

Time for Solidarity

During the month of December Kenko Adventures carried out a solidarity initiative to bring joy and hope to the community of Willoq. Our travelers, committed to social work, worked together with us to counteract the inclement cold of the area. Thanks to this we were able to give cold weather jackets to the children of this locality and share with them a sweet chocolate. This event was not only a gesture of support, but also a bridge that connected tourists with the reality and needs of this community.

Socio-Cultural Context

The community maintains an agricultural lifestyle and is dedicated to the production of corn, quinoa, and other traditional crops. Their festivities, such as the celebration of Inti Raymi (Feast of the Sun) and the Virgen del Carmen, are key moments in which they express their spiritual beliefs and connection with nature.

Willoq's architecture is also very representative of Andean culture, with adobe houses and thatched roofs, which blend perfectly with the natural surroundings. As such, most of the porters working for the famous Inca Trail to Machu Picchu come from these villages.

A Project with a Purpose

This project has a simple but very important premise: Thanks to each reservation made at our agency, a jacket was donated to a child in the community of Willoq Patacancha. This initiative arises from the desire to make a tangible difference in the lives of those who need it most, especially in regions where temperatures can drop considerably at night.

Our travelers not only take away the experience of visiting wonderful places and having unforgettable experiences, they are also part of a movement that generates a positive impact between responsible tourism and community welfare.

The Presentation of the Jackets: An Unforgettable Moment

The day of the delivery the weather received us with its inclement cold, as the morning progressed this cold was replaced by the warm rays of the sun that filled us with energy and enthusiasm, like the sun, the people of Willoq welcomed us with open arms and a warmth that defied the low temperatures. The little children, dressed in their costumes, ponchos and colorful skirts, were waiting for us with smiles full of curiosity and joy.

The little ones received the jackets in an orderly fashion, their faces lit up as they tried on the new clothes that gave them physical and, in one way or another, emotional warmth. This moment was engraved in the hearts and minds of all those present.

The Traditional Chocolate Milk

The day progressed and it was time to get together with the villagers, young and old were participants in the sweet chocolate milk. Prepared with care by both parents and members of Kenko Adventures, we all sat down to drink the chocolate and the delicious traditional bread that accompanies these events and share with the villagers.

The chocolatada was more than just sharing; it was an opportunity to connect, learn and strengthen the bonds between travelers and locals. The children sang and played, while the adults exchanged stories and laughter, reminding us that generosity goes beyond cultures and geographies.

Impact of Responsible Tourism

When we talk about tourism we think of great trips, amazing places, adventure and more, however it also has the power to be used to transform lives in a positive way. Not only for the travelers but also for the host communities. At Kenko Adventures, we strongly believe in responsible tourism as a driver of sustainable development. This jacket donation project is just one example of how tourism experiences can go beyond exploration, contributing to the well-being of those who make these destinations so special.

By choosing to travel with a conscience, our tourists not only explore the world; they also enrich it.
