Itinerary
Itinerary of Lares Trek 2 Days + Short Inca Trail 2 Days
This adventure will start in Cusco, picking you up from your hotel in our private transportation for approximately 1 and a half hour, we will reach the Calca District which is located in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Here we will make a stop for approximately 45 minutes to visit the local market, then we will board our transport for another 30 minutes and reach the Huaran Community located inside the Sacred Valley itself, it is 2800 m.a.s.l. From here, we will start our hike which will gradually ascend to Huaran Valley which has lush flora and fauna.
This is the perfect place to see our llamas and alpacas in their natural habitat, we will also see endemic native trees and medicinal plantas which ancient Inca community of Cancha Cancha uses as natural remedies; we will also see fantastic views of the Mountain and snow capped peaks in the andes. This first stretch will take approximately 3 hours until reach our camp to have lunch. Here we will have 1 hour approx. to enjoy our delicious and nutritive menu.
With our renovated energies we will continue our hike with the first views of the nearby snow capped mountains and within an hour we will reach the Cancha Cancha ancient community which will be our campsite. Once we are settled, we will visit one of the local homes to know more about their lifestyle and share some activities with them.
Upon completion of this day, we will have a moment of relax and enjoy some hot beverages, as well as our dinner.
Our second adventure day will start very early in the morning with tent service with hot coca tea which is good for the altitude, right after we will have our sustaining breakfast. Also, our personal will offer you water to fill your bottles along the day and then start our hike. On the way we will see a lot of alpacas, llamas and Cancha Cancha local people plowing native potatoes; there will also be opportunity to see wild animals such as vizcachas considered rodents that live in the rocky terrains.
This day is considered the hardest as you will climb until the highest point of the hike, surrounded by our snow capped Mountains considered as protector entities:
Pitusiray, Sahuasiray and Colque Cruz; after we will reach our destination, Pachacuti Pass which is situated 4600 m.a.s.l. This stunning scenery will be adorned with colorful lagoons, laciers and other south American camelids.
Once we reach our objective, we will continue our hike and descend to Lares Valley which belongs to a very ancient path considered inca, through the andes, waterfals, lagoons, creeks, natural landscapes until finally reaching ancient inca community of Qishuarani, here our second lunch place it will be at a lovely rustic lodge and then we will continuing by bus to Ollantaytambo town where we will meet your family and you will have a hotel accomodation and next day we can conect with the Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu all together.
The Short Inca Trail start in Cusco city. We will pick you up from your hotel at 6:00 am using our private transportation, accompanied by a professional tour guide. The journey will take approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes to reach Ollantaytambo train station.
Upon arrival, you will board the Expedition-class train at 7:45 am for a scenic 1 hour and 10-minute ride. During the journey, marvel at the breathtaking Andes Mountains and Glaciers of the Sacred Valley of the Incas. After an hour, the landscape will shift dramatically as we enter tropical forests, reaching km 104, where our short Inca Trail hike begins.
Before commencing the hike, we will go through the main checkpoint, presenting our pre-arranged personal documentation and tickets. Restrooms are available for use before embarking on the hike. The Short inca trail starts with a visit to the archaeological site named Chachabamba, followed by a moderate climb through lush biodiversity, featuring numerous endemic orchids and fern species. After a few hours, we'll reach a small waterfall for a break and snacks. Subsequently, we'll visit the second archaeological site, Wiñayhuayna, where our Kenko Adventures tour guide will explain its ancient significance. You'll have free time to explore the site on your own.
Continuing the hike, we'll reach the last campsite for 4-day Inca Trail hikers, where we'll stop for lunch (a box lunch is included for everyone). This trail section is relatively easier, with both uphill and downhill stretches, until we reach Inti Punku (Sun Gate). Here, you'll enjoy the first fantastic view of Machu Picchu Citadel from the Inca Trail.
After capturing photos from the Sun Gate, we'll continue for another 40 minutes downhill to arrive at Machu Picchu for our first day visit. Finally, we'll reach Machu Picchu, concluding the day's hike with a sunset view from a postcard-worthy vantage point. We'll then board a bus to Aguas Calientes town (bus tickets included), where you'll be accommodated at a 3-star hotel. Our service includes dinner and a glass of Pisco Sour (Peru's national drink) at a nearby restaurant that night.
We recommend starting your day very early for several reasons: to take the first bus up to Machu Picchu then witness the breathtaking sunrise at Machu Picchu, embark on a walking tour with your private guide to explore the site with fewer visitors, and avoid long lines to enter Machu Picchu. Your guide will then lead you through a walking tour of the Machu Picchu Inca city.
Upon entering the Inca citadel, our clients will enjoy a private walking tour lasting 2 hours and 30 minutes, exploring the most remarkable places within this wonder. Subsequently, there will be some free time to visit interesting locations such as Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain (we recommend booking these tickets at least 2 months in advance).
After completing the tour, our clients will board a bus to Aguas Calientes, where they can enjoy lunch before catching the VISTADOME TRAIN with a 360-degree view, according to the pre-arranged schedule, to Ollantaytambo train station. From there, our private transportation will pick you up and return you to Cusco city directly to your hotel, concluding our services.

How is the climate in Cusco?
The climate in Peru is highly variable and does not conform to the typical four seasons. Here in the Andes, you can experience all seasons in a single day! This is why we always recommend our visitors prepare for any occasion, whether it's for rain or sunny days. A significant factor affecting our global climate is global warming, which has contributed to glacier melting in the Peruvian Andes, impacting our weather patterns. Nonetheless, Peru, and particularly Andean cities like Cusco, have two main seasons:
- Dry Season: Generally from the end of April until the end of September, with the first rains beginning towards the end of this period. This is often considered the best time to visit our region and the amazing Machu Picchu to avoid inconveniences.
- Rainy Season: This season typically runs from October until the end of April. During this time, we advise all visitors to pack their belongings into waterproof bags, as sunny mornings can quickly turn into heavy rain. We understand that extreme climates exist worldwide, but this should not deter your desire to explore the world, discover marvelous cultures, and interact with them. Welcome to Peru and Machu Picchu.
