Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain

Huayna Picchu Mountain

Huayna Picchu's Mountain is located inside the citadel of Machu Picchu, near the zone of the denominated "Sacred Rock". A climb of 100 feet awaits for the visitors that decide to visit this section of the world wonder. A round trip of 1 hour from and back the Sacred Rock's checkpoint with unparalleled vistas of the citadel await for the few that get to reserve the scarce tickets needed to get to this section.  (Photo Credit: Bruce Dall)

Also, Huayna Picchu's Mountain conserves some archaeological remains as the Moon Temple and other precincts that are interconnected with authentic trails, steps, tunnels and natural caves which made the view more interesting. Without any doubt, this is one of the best attractions of Machu Picchu; the Huayna Picchu Mountain offers a 360-degree view and a stunning view of Machu Picchu Inca Citadel, Machu Picchu's Mountain and the famous Sun Gate (Inti Punku). Currently, our government, through the Ministry of Culture, maintains the visitor count per day controlled. Only 400 tickets are offered per day and divided into 2 groups of 200 each. The first schedule starts from 7:00 to 8:00 am and the second from 10:00 to 11:00 am. For this reason, demand is growing day by day. If any of our visitors are interested in this hike, it is necessary to make a booking at least 3 months in advance to guarantee their visit to this extraordinary place.

Machu Picchu Mountain:

This mountain is located inside the park as well, and is only 1 hour and 20 minutes away hiking on your own. Once you reach the summit, you will take impressive photos with panoramic views of the entire valley in which Machu Picchu's Citadel is situated; you will also have impressive views of the Andes Mountain range and the glaciers that protect this unique ecosystem.

The demand to obtain permits for this hike is quickly growing, so we advise booking tickets at least 2 months in advance. There is a limit for visitors per day to experience this amazing hike. This hike has 2 schedules: the first from 7:00 am to 8:00 am and the second from 9:00 am to 10:00 am, with a limit of 200 people per group.

So, Which suits me better?

Machu Picchu Mountain, with its higher elevation, provides hikers with panoramic vistas of the surrounding valleys and the majestic Andes Mountain range. The hike typically takes around 1 hour and 20 minutes, offering ample opportunities for breathtaking photography and serene contemplation at the summit. While the trail is considered less steep compared to Huayna Picchu, it still requires a moderate level of physical fitness and endurance.

To make a quick comparison between both possible destinations we need to base ourselves in one principal fact, a climb through steep stairs that may take up to 1 hour and 20 minutes of constant movilization. In this case, we are talking about Huayna Picchu, which is characterized by this, you'll even need cables to reach the summit and see the Inca constructions, but its visitors would say that the .

It is actually an extreme adventure, you could say it is only for those who are not afraid of heights or can challenge this fear; this does not happen when you go to Machu Picchu Mountain, since it has a narrow path and is more relaxing to reach the summit, but remember that you are climbing to an altitude of 3,000 m.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Huayna Picchu

  • It helps you overcome your fear of heights.
  • You will be able to appreciate new Inca constructions at the top of this mountain.
  • You will visit the Temple of the Moon and some agricultural terraces.
  • It may seem like a dangerous path, but so far all adventurers have not had any problems.
  • It is a very touristy area and you will not be alone.
  • You can visit with your children over 12 years old, but keep in mind that the path is difficult.
