Inca Trail 5 Days Tour to Machu Picchu

Tour 2025

Overview

While many rush the path to Machu Picchu, we believe the true spirit of the Andes reveals itself to those who choose to walk with intention. The Inca Trail 5 Days is not just a longer trek; it is a deliberate choice for a deeper, more profound connection with the landscape and its incredible Inca culture history. This is your chance to experience the trail's serene moments, stay at quieter, more exclusive Inca Trail campsites, and let the majesty of the mountains truly sink in. It's a journey that tackles the fundamental question of Inca Trail comparison, and its answer is found in the tranquility of an extra day.

This is a path that will test you, and that is where its beauty lies. It’s a challenge that rewards every ounce of effort with unparalleled satisfaction. You will stand at the summit of the legendary Dead Woman’s Pass, a true test of the Inca Trail altitude, breathless from both the elevation and the magnificent views of the surrounding sacred peaks. You will push your limits and discover a strength you never knew you had. This is the very essence of trekking in Peru: a journey of personal conquest.

Image
Inca Trail 5 Days and 4 night

But this is more than a physical challenge; it is a pilgrimage through time. You will walk on stones laid by the Incas themselves, following a sacred route that was once part of the great Qhapaq Ñan. You will explore ruins hidden deep in the cloud forest like Chachabamba, finding ways of escaping the crowds to get to Machu Picchu long before you arrive. Nothing prepares you for that final, golden moment when you step through the Sun Gate (Inti Punku) to witness your own private sunrise over the mystical citadel, the ultimate reward for those who choose the unhurried path.

The Inca Trail 5 Days is an investment in an experience that will stay with you forever. It's for those who seek to understand, not just to see, a philosophy that is core to everything we do at Kenko Adventures.

With the formalities complete, we take our first steps onto the legendary path.

The initial segment is a gentle introduction, a relatively flat path that follows the Urubamba River. The trail soon leads us to the impressive ruins of Patallacta, a sprawling agricultural center that once supplied food to Machu Picchu. Your guide will reveal its strategic importance. As we continue, the quaint village of Miskay marks a shift in the landscape, where the path begins its gradual, steady ascent. It’s on this path that you’ll first witness the incredible work of our porters, the heart and soul of our team, whose well-being is central to our social projects in Cusco.

Today is the most demanding day of the Inca Trail 5 Days, and our chef prepares a powerful breakfast to fuel our ascent into the majestic Inca mountain range.

The morning is a formidable, yet rewarding, climb up nearly 2,000 ancient Inca steps. This is the ultimate test of endurance, and our guides are experts at setting a sustainable pace. As we climb, the ecosystem shifts dramatically, entering a beautiful high-altitude forest. Here, we can often spot some of the native wildlife found on the Inca Trail, like llamas, alpacas, and vibrant birdlife. After a few hours of steady effort, we reach Llulluchapampa, a small plateau perfect for a short rest and snacks.

The final push takes us above the treeline to the summit of Warmiwañusqa, "Dead Woman’s Pass," at a breathtaking 4,215 meters. Reaching this summit is a profound personal victory. The breathtaking panoramic views of the Vilcabamba and Vilcanota mountain ranges are your spectacular reward. The challenge of this day highlights the difficulty level of the Inca Trail, and conquering it is an unforgettable achievement.

A 1.5-hour descent along a stone path brings us to our secluded Pacaymayu campsite. After a well-earned, hearty lunch, the afternoon is for rest and recovery. As dusk falls, we celebrate our triumphs with appetizers and another delightful dinner, sharing stories under a brilliant canopy of stars.

After breakfast, a 45-minute uphill hike reveals the circular ruins of Runkuracay, a Tambo (Inca checkpoint) perfectly positioned to watch over the valley. Another 45-minute climb takes us to the second pass of our trek, Runkuracay Pass (3,900m).

From the pass, we descend into a new world. The trail transforms into a beautiful, original Inca highway, a part of the great Qhapaq Ñan, plunging into the lush, humid cloud forest. This biome is teeming with life, from delicate orchids and wild begonias to vibrant hummingbirds. We’ll soon arrive at the aptly named Sayacmarka ("Inaccessible Town"), a stunning fortress clinging to a cliffside. Here, our knowledgeable Kenko tour guides will bring its history to life.

We continue our walk through this magical forest until we pause for another delicious trailside lunch. The path first unveils the stunning agricultural terraces of Intipata, seemingly carved into the mountainside. From there, we continue down to what is arguably the most beautiful ruin on the trail: the magnificent ruins of Wiñay Wayna ("Forever Young"). After a thorough exploration of this "miniature Machu Picchu," we enjoy our final, celebratory trail lunch.

With our goal in sight, we embark on the final, one-hour trek to the Inti Punku. Seeing it from this vantage point, bathed in the golden afternoon light, is the ultimate reward.

We then take a bus down to the bustling town of Aguas Calientes, where a comfortable hotel room and a well-deserved restaurant dinner await, a touch of Inca trail glamping to end our adventure on the trail.

FAQS

Can I store my luggage at your office?

Of course! During your Cusco Machu Picchu Tour, your main luggage can be stored safely at our office or at your hotel. Both options are free of charge. We advise you not to pack anything you will not need for your hike, ensuring you can trek light.

Do I need my original passport for the Cusco Machu Picchu tour?

Yes, it is essential to bring your original passport for your Cusco Machu Picchu tour. The passport number must match the one you provided at the time of booking, as rangers at Machu Picchu and train companies will meticulously check it before allowing entry or boarding. In case you are changing your passport or have lost it and obtained a new one, please send us your new passport information immediately to secure your permit and prevent any surprises upon arrival.

How do i get the student ISIC card discount?

Eligible students can receive a discount. You must possess a valid and current internationally accepted ISIC card in your name. You can apply for an ISIC Card at https://www.isic.org/. Please provide a copy of your ISIC card at the time of your booking by sending it to info@kenkoadventures.com.

How do I qualify for the student discount? (-$20)

According to Peruvian government laws, to qualify for the student discount, you must be under 18 years of age at the time of your trek, tour, or visit to Machu Picchu (students aged 18 and above generally require an ISIC card). For example, if you book a trek at 17 but turn 18 before your trek date, you will not qualify for the discount. Students from 12 to 17 years old receive a $20 discount, as do children from 2 to 12 years old. Children aged 0 to 2 are free. All students must send a copy of their passport at the time of booking to receive the discount; please send it to info@kenkoadventures.com.

How is the climate in Cusco?

The climate in Peru is highly variable and does not conform to the typical four seasons. Here in the Andes, you can experience all seasons in a single day! This is why we always recommend our visitors prepare for any occasion, whether it's for rain or sunny days. A significant factor affecting our global climate is global warming, which has contributed to glacier melting in the Peruvian Andes, impacting our weather patterns. Nonetheless, Peru, and particularly Andean cities like Cusco, have two main seasons:

  • Dry Season: Generally from the end of April until the end of September, with the first rains beginning towards the end of this period. This is often considered the best time to visit our region and the amazing Machu Picchu to avoid inconveniences.
  • Rainy Season: This season typically runs from October until the end of April. During this time, we advise all visitors to pack their belongings into waterproof bags, as sunny mornings can quickly turn into heavy rain. We understand that extreme climates exist worldwide, but this should not deter your desire to explore the world, discover marvelous cultures, and interact with them. Welcome to Peru and Machu Picchu.

How to book the tour?

To book our tour, we need you to fill out our booking form with your personal information by clicking on BOOK NOW. Please be ready with the following information for each participant in your group, exactly as it appears on your passport: full name, gender, passport number, date of birth (dd/mm/yyyy), and nationality. We cannot purchase an entrance to Machu Picchu or your train ticket without this precise information.

Huayna Picchu Mountain (What is this hike, and how do I book it?)

This iconic Huayna Picchu Mountain is located within Machu Picchu Archaeological Park, towering approximately 300 meters above the citadel. The hike typically takes about 45 minutes to ascend and another 45 minutes to descend. This Mountain preserves fascinating archaeological remains, such as the Moon Temple, and other precincts interconnected by authentic trails, steps, tunnels, and natural caves, making the view incredibly interesting. Without a doubt, this is one of the best attractions of Machu Picchu; the Huayna Picchu Mountain offers a 360-degree view and a stunning panorama of Machu Picchu Inca Citadel, Machu Picchu Mountain, and the famous Inti Punku (Sun’s Gate). Currently, the Peruvian government, through the Ministry of Culture, controls visitor entry, offering only 400 tickets per day, divided into two groups of 200 each (7:00-8:00 AM and 10:00-11:00 AM schedules). Due to high demand, it is necessary to make a booking at least 3 months in advance to guarantee your visit to this extraordinary place.

Day 03: Pacaymayo – Runkuracay – Sayacmarka – Phuyupatamarca

Awakening to the enchanting chorus of the valley, we begin a day filled with incredible vistas and archaeological wonders.

Our journey then leads to our campsite at Phuyupatamarca ("Town in the Clouds"), one of the most impressive sites on the trail. Exploring its ritual fountains and sacred plazas as the clouds swirl below is a mystical experience unique to this 5-day itinerary. This is the essence of trekking in Peru.

Day 04: Phuyupatamarca – Intipata – Wiñayhuayna – Intipunku – Machupicchu – Aguas Calientes.

This is the day we’ve been working towards. Waking up above the clouds at Phuyupatamarca is an experience in itself. After an early breakfast, we begin our final descent towards Machu Picchu.

Nothing can truly prepare you for the moment you step through the stone frame of the Sun Gate and are met with your first, awe-inspiring panoramic view of the Lost City of the Incas. Seeing it from this vantage point, bathed in the golden afternoon light, is the ultimate reward.

Image

We begin our final descent towards the citadel itself, stopping at the famous Guard House for those iconic, postcard-perfect photos. As most visitors have already left for the day, a profound sense of peace envelops the sanctuary. This unhurried, magical experience is one of the greatest advantages of the Inca Trail 5 Days. We then take a bus down to the bustling town of Aguas Calientes, where a comfortable hotel room and a well-deserved restaurant dinner await, a touch of Inca trail glamping to end our adventure on the trail.

In case you are changing your passport or have lost it and obtained a new one, please send us your new passport information immediately to secure your permit and prevent any surprises upon arrival.

How do i get the student ISIC card discount?

Once you reach the summit, you will capture impressive photos with panoramic views of the entire valley, encompassing Machu Picchu Inca citadel, impressive vistas of the Andes Mountain range, and the glaciers that protect this unique ecosystem. The demand for permits for this hike is growing quickly, so we advise booking tickets a minimum of 2 months in advance, as there is a limit of 200 people per group per schedule (7:00-8:00 AM and 9:00-10:00 AM).

May I change the departure date after the tickets have been bought?
